Mamiya RZ67

After the great succes of the RB67 a new and redesigned RZ67 was introduced in 1982. The RZ67 was now partly eletronic inside and came in a more modern looking body design. The RZ67 features the same rotating back system as found on the RB67 and has the same amazing bellows focusing system. The RZ67 was never meant to be a replacement of the RB67, since they were produced simultaneously for a long time.

Main specs of the Mamiya RZ67:

Just as the RB, the RZ shoots 6x7cm sized negatives on 120 or 220 film. The film back can be changed mid-roll and rotated from vertical to horizontal with the flick of a switch. The camera operates very similar as the RB but has some major differences in its operation. Where the RB67 was fully mechanical, the RZ67 now was partly electronic inside. It does need a 4LR44 battery in order to release the shutter. Maximum shutter is still 1/400th, but the longest speed is now 8 full seconds. The shutters are leafshutters that are located inside the lenses, allowing for flash sync on all times. Focusing is done with a bellows system, but the RZ67 now had a fine tune focusing gear for high precision.

The overall cosmetics of the camera were upgraded. The body panels are now made of a bit more plastic and rubber in stead of the old cold metal on the RB. With the metered AE prism finder the RZ67 can be shot on aperture priority mode, very handy in quick changing ligting conditions some photographers had to deal with. The RZ67 also received an improved film advance system. You now only have to pull down 1 large lever to cock the shutter, advance the film and lower the mirror, with the RB this was a 2-step process. RZ67 lenses will not fit on the RB camera and vise versa.

Mamiya RZ67 variants:

The original Mamiya RZ67 was released in 1982. In 1993 it was replaced by the Professional II which some upgraded electornics, the fine focus gear and half stop shutter speed increments. The RZ67 Professional IID (2004) was a copy of the RZ67 Pro II but was capable to communicate with digital sensor backs. The most important difference for film shooters lays in the version film back: the 120 Professional II back did not have light seals anymore, so did not need service on that aspect.

If you like the RZ but would like to have a fully mechanical camera, the RB is the way to go. Both these cameras are in our rental service if you would like to try them out first.

Pros of the Mamiya RZ67:

  • 1 motion film advance and shutter cocking
  • Aperture Priority mode (with AE prism)
  • Bellows focusing system

Cons of the Mamiya RZ67:

  • The RZ67 is quite large and heavy, less ergonomical than traditional SLRs.
  • Does not operate without batteries
