Pentax 6×7 / 67

Back in 1969 Pentax released a true icon into the film photography world, the Pentax 6×7 series. It resembles a conventional 35mm SLR camera but with huge 6x7cm negatives. The Pentax 6×7 is often nicknamed ”the tank” because its such a large camera that makes quite a loud clap when the shutter is released. This system was hugely popular amongst professional photographers and nowadays is still sought after because of its legendary lens options like the unique rendering Takumar 105mm F/2.4. Often regognized by the optional wooden left hand grip.

No Pentax 6x7 / 67 in stock for this moment. Click here to see our actual Pentax collection or here to get notified by email about our latest items.

Main specs of the Pentax 6×7 / 67:

The Pentax 6×7 is a medium format SLR with semi electronic operation. The camera does need batteries to release the shutter and power the optional TTL prism finder. You will get 10 exposures out of a roll of 120 film, the camera can also be set to 220 film, resulting in 20 exposures. The focal plane shutters speeds range from 1s to 1/1000th. The camera only has a full manual exposure mode. As a standard the camera does not have a built in meter, this is located in the metered prism. The Pentax 6×7 system is very modular with many options for finders, the iconic wooden grip and of course the beautiful and razor sharp 67 lens lineup.

The Pentax 6×7 is quite heavy when comparing it to other medium format options like the Hasselblad or Mamiya 645 series. However, when comparing it to other 6×7 options like the Mamiya RB67 this camera is actually just as heavy but with much better ergonomics due its SLR grip design. The only downside of the Pentax 67 series is the big mirror slap, this can cause internal vibrations so we recommend shooting on 1/125th or above when shooting handheld. If you are into long exposure photography we recommend shooting from a tripod and getting the MLU version.

Pentax 6×7 / 67 variants:

The first Pentax 6×7 was released in 1969. This camera later received an nice upgrade: the introduction of the mirror lock up function (MLU). This model often is reffered to as 6×7 MLU. The last version of the first generation was released in 1990 and named 67, this camera does not have any extra features other than new style logo’s, fonts cosmetics.1969: Pentax 6×7 – first generation. 1976: Pentax 6×7 MLU – same as first, with addition of MLU. 1990: Pentax 67 – same as third but with minor cosmetic changes

Not sure if the Pentax 6×7 is the one for you? We also rent out this camera so you can try it out first! Would you like to have a similar but more modern camera with aperture priority and multiple light metering modes, then the Pentax 67II is your pick.

  • SLR, very easy to adapt to from a 35mm SLR
  • Very modular system and ergonomic design
  • Great lens options

Cons of the Pentax 6×7 / 67:
