Nikon F3
After the F and F2 the bar was certainly set high for the new F3. Released in 1980 and hunderds of thousands have been made. The F3 was their first professional SLR to feature an built in light meter in the body and an AE (aperture priority) mode. The housing now was made of lighter materials and the camera overall is a bit smaller. It quickly became an all time favorite in the Nikon community since it’s the perfect match in size, weight and functionality. The F3 is one of the most customizable camera systems ever made and is a very sought after camera up to date.
The F3 does need AI or AI-S lenses to have a proper working light meter. With this Nikon finlally said goodbye to the old style bunny ears for light meter coupling. The Nikon F3 is also the first camera to feature the iconic red stripe in its grip, which is still seen on modern Nikons today.
Main specs of the Nikon F3:
The Nikon F3 is a 35mm SLR camera with built in light meter. The camera can shoot on aperture priority or full manual exposure modes. The camera does need 2x LR44 batteries to fire, but a 1/60th mechanical backup is present. Shutter speeds range from 1/2000th to 8 full seconds. The F3 houses a electronic selftimer, mirror lockup, DOF preview, and LCD screen above the focusing screen to show selected shutter speeds.
Nikon F3 variants:
As stated, the Nikon F3 is the most modular Nikon ever. Over 10 different focusing screens are available. The optional Nikon MD-4 motordrive enables you to shoot multiple frames a second and automatically advances the film. Multiple finders can be installed which also have some influence on the name of the camera. The standard F3 came with a DE-2 prism finder. Later on the F3HP was released, which housed a High Eyepoint finder (DE-3) for glass wearers. The Nikon F3 standard came in black only.
Nikon F3/T
The Nikon F3 was already a very sturdy camera but Nikon released a titanium housing one in 2 color options: titanium silver and a black finished one. The cameras look and work the same as the original Nikon F3, but are made out of a different body housing material.
Nikon F3P (press)
The Nikon F3P was made specifically for professional and press shooters. The main differences are upgraded internals for daily use. The shutter release was upgraded, the camera received a different on/off switch and the DE-5 prism finder now featured a built on hotshoe for easy flash use. Usually you will find the F3P in very beat up condition because of its professional nature.
Nikon F3AF
Many don’t know this, but the Nikon F3AF was actually Nikons first attempt at an professional autofocusing SLR. Ground breaking for the time back then, but not good enough for most applications, this was later resolved with the release of the Nikon F4 camera.
Pros of the Nikon F3:
- Aperture priority
- Very modular camera system
Cons of the Nikon F3:
- Needs batteries to operate
- Only works well with AI or AI-s lenses
- A bit more plasticy compared to the F/F2
